Grand Cru Altenberg de Wolxheim

The History

From the eighth century, the abbeys of the region owned vineyards in the vineyards of Wolxheim. J.L. Stoltz, historian of the Alsatian vineyard in the nineteenth century, mentions that: “Riesling was only found in Alsace before the revolution in a few privileged enclosures, such as that of Altenberg, on the ban of Wolxheim.” Napoleon III had Riesling delivered from Wolxheim by the sculptor Philippe Grass, a native of Wolxheim.

The Grape

100% Riesling

Tasting Note

Bright pale gold colour, green reflections. Racy nose combining lemon, grapefruit, mineral, chalky presence. On the palate a very dry, straightforward, rich style that expresses its mineral personality with finesse and precision. We appreciate his delicacy, his naturalness

Winemaking

The marl soil is heavy, but the limestone rock is only one meter deep, which allows both good water reserves to be maintained and good drainage because the vines do not like excess water. Finally, these soils are naturally rich in mineral elements. Cellaring: at least 10 years.
